Whats Happening was Doomed to Happen

I love David Fincher’s movies. While Alien 3 was weak on story within the context of what had come before, it is a strong piece of film making. Even if Fincher himself hates it. I also prefer the original Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, even though visually his remake is gorgeous. Again there are story elements that fall short.

He’s made truly iconic movies. Seven and Fight Club are stunners. Can’t get enough of them.

  • 1992 - Alien 3

  • 1995 - Seven

  • 1997 - The Game

  • 1099 - Fight Club

  • 2002 - Panic Room

  • 2007 - Zodiac

  • 2008 - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

  • 2010 - The Social Network

  • 2011 - The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

  • 2014 - Gone Girl

  • 2020 - Mank (October of 2020)

These are not all perfect films, but all are easily a re-watchable, except maybe Gone Girl. I just find no character in that movie to even remotely identify with. Worth one watch for sure.

Like many film makers, he got he got a start or notice directing music videos. After watching them all back to back, I notice the soft filter is PRONOUNCED in all of them and it really dates them.

  • 1989 - “Janie’s Got a Gun” - Aerosmith

  • 1990 - “Freedom ‘90” - George Michael

  • 1990 - “Vogue” - Madonna

  • 1993 - “Who is it?” - Michael Jackson

I really can’t say anything that hasn’t been said before about his movies, so here are a couple of really good commentaries on his work from some of my favorite channels on film.

This next video kicks in starting with Fincher’s commercial work for Nike in 2008 and is a bit more long form on the movies that followed.

Fincher really is a master and I look forward to where he goes from here with both film and “TV” .
